The Supplication of Praise

After the Blessing Was Unveiled

A supplication for seeing the hand behind blessing, cause, and event: protection in withholding, mercy in unveiling, wisdom in the boundary — and gratitude, the door to the increase of blessing. With the Arabic original, transliteration, and English translation.

Bismillâhi’r-rahmâni’r-rahîm

In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.

El-hamdü lillâhillezî lâ yuhmedü hamden illâ kâne hüve’llezî elhemeh, ve lâ yüşkerü şükran illâ kâne hüve’llezî eykazah, ve lâ türâ ni‘metün illâ kâne hüve’llezî keşefe sitrahâ, ve lâ yüfhemü sebebün illâ kâne hüve’llezî era’l-kalbe mâ verâe’s-sebeb.

Praise belongs to God — no praise is offered but that He is the One who inspired it; no thanks is given but that He is the One who awakened it; no blessing is seen but that He is the One who lifted its veil; and no cause is understood but that He is the One who showed the heart what lies beyond the cause.

El-hamdü lillâhi hîne yu‘tî, ve’l-hamdü lillâhi hîne yürî, ve’l-hamdü lillâhi hîne yüfehhim, ve’l-hamdü lillâhi hîne yülhim, ve’l-hamdü lillâhi hîne yec‘alü’l-hamde ni‘meten fevka’n-ni‘meh.

Praise be to God when He gives; praise be to God when He shows; praise be to God when He grants understanding; praise be to God when He inspires; and praise be to God when He makes praise itself a blessing atop the blessing.

Yâ Rabbi, mâ arafne’n-ni‘mete illâ bik, ve mâ şekernâhâ illâ bitevfîkık, ve mâ vecednâ fi’l-kalbi sekînete’l-hamdi illâ min feydık.

O my Lord, we did not know the blessing except through You; we did not thank it except by Your enabling; and we did not find in the heart the tranquility of praise except from Your overflowing grace.

So to You be praise for the blessing; to You be praise for the recognition of the blessing; to You be praise for the thanks; and to You be praise for having made gratitude a door to the increase of the blessing.

Kulte ve kavlüke’l-hakk: Lein şekertüm leezîdenneküm. Fesübhâneke, mâ ekremek. Tu‘ti’n-ni‘mete, sümme tu‘ti’ş-şükra, sümme tec‘alü’ş-şükra sebeben liziyâdeti mâ a‘tayt.

You said — and Your word is the truth: “If you are thankful, I shall surely increase you.” So glory be to You, how generous You are! You give the blessing, then give the thanks, then make the thanks a cause for the increase of what You gave.

Yâ Allâh, inne min a‘zami ni‘amike en türiye’l-abde yedeke fi’l-ahdâs, felâ yekıfe inde’l-eşhâs, ve lâ yedîa fi’l-esbâb, ve lâ yahbise kalbehû inde’l-curh, bel yerâ min verâi’l-curhi terbiyetek, ve min verâi’l-men‘ı hıfzak, ve min verâi’l-keşfi rahmetek, ve min verâi’l-haddi lutfek.

O God, among Your greatest blessings is that You show the servant Your hand in events, so that he does not halt at persons, nor lose himself in causes, nor imprison his heart at the wound; but rather sees, behind the wound, Your nurturing; behind the withholding, Your protection; behind the unveiling, Your mercy; and behind the boundary, Your gentleness.

Fekem min bâbin uğlika, fekâne iğlâkuhû fethâ. Ve kem min rızkın münia, fekâne men‘uhû savnâ. Ve kem min insânin küşife, fekâne keşfühû necâh. Ve kem min haddin vudıa, fekâne’l-haddü rahmeh.

How many a door was closed, yet its closing was an opening. How many a provision was withheld, yet its withholding was a safeguarding. How many a person was exposed, yet his exposure was a deliverance. And how many a boundary was set, yet the boundary was a mercy.

Praise belongs to God, who nurtures His servants by what they understand and by what they do not understand. Praise belongs to God, who drives the decrees, then unveils the wisdom afterward. Praise belongs to God, who, when He takes something, gives in its place an insight; when He reveals something, reveals with it the true place of the heart; and when He inspires the writing, makes the pen prostrate with the meaning before it writes with ink.

Yâ Rabbi, in ketebnâ febiiznik, ve in hamidnâ febitevfîkık, ve in şekernâ febifadlik, ve in seketet kulûbünâ febizikrik.

O my Lord, if we have written, it is by Your leave; if we have praised, by Your enabling; if we have thanked, by Your grace; and if our hearts have found stillness, it is by Your remembrance.

Kulte sübhâneke: Elâ bizikri’llâhi tatmainnü’l-kulûb. Fevecednâ sıdka’l-âyeti fî ecsâdinâ kable elsinetinâ, ve fî sekîneti’s-sadri kable savti’l-kelâm, ve fi’n-nûrillezî yenzilü ale’l-kalbi hîne yekûl: el-hamdü lillâh, ve lillâhi’l-hamd.

You said — glory be to You: “Truly, it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find rest.” So we found the truth of the verse in our bodies before our tongues, in the tranquility of the breast before the sound of speech, and in the light that descends upon the heart when it says: Praise be to God, and to God belongs all praise.

Sübhâneke yâ Allâh, izâ zekernâke, zekertenâ. Ve izâ şekernâke, zidtenâ. Ve izâ raca‘nâ ileyke, fetahte lenâ min ebvâbi’l-fehmi mâ lâ yeftehuhü’l-cidâl.

Glory be to You, O God: when we remembered You, You remembered us. When we thanked You, You increased us. And when we returned to You, You opened for us doors of understanding that argument cannot open.

Felâ nera’l-umûre kemâ terâhe’n-nüfûsü’l-mudtaribeh, bel nerâhâ kemâ yürîhe’llâhü limen erâde en yütahhira kalbeh.

So we do not see matters as agitated souls see them, but as God shows them to one whose heart He wills to purify.

Nerâ fi’l-men‘ı savnâ. Ve fi’l-keşfi rahmeh. Ve fi’l-haddi hikmeh. Ve fi’l-elemi te’dîbâ. Ve fi’l-hamdi fethâ. Ve fi’ş-şükri ziyâdeh. Ve fi’z-zikri hayâh.

We see in withholding a safeguarding; in unveiling, a mercy; in the boundary, a wisdom; in pain, a discipline; in praise, an opening; in gratitude, an increase; and in remembrance, a life.

Yâ Rabbi, lâ tec‘alnâ mimmen yera’n-ni‘mete ve lâ ya‘rifü’l-mün‘ım. Ve lâ mimmen yera’s-sebebe ve yensa’l-müsebbib. Ve lâ mimmen yera’l-fethe feyağterr. Ve lâ mimmen yera’l-men‘a feyecza‘. Ve lâ mimmen yektübü feyensübü’l-kitâbete ilâ nefsih. Ve lâ mimmen yahmedü sümme yera’l-hamde min havlihî ve kuvvetih.

O my Lord, do not make us of those who see the blessing yet do not know the Bestower; nor of those who see the cause and forget the Causer; nor of those who see the opening and grow deluded; nor of those who see the withholding and despair; nor of those who write and ascribe the writing to themselves; nor of those who praise, then see the praise as coming from their own power and strength.

Beli’c‘alnâ mimmen izâ u‘tıye, kâle: el-hamdü lillâh. Ve izâ münia, kâle: el-hamdü lillâh. Ve izâ küşife leh, kâle: el-hamdü lillâh. Ve izâ ülhime, kâle: el-hamdü lillâh. Ve izâ vecede fî kalbihî râhate’z-zikri, kâle: hâzâ min fadli rabbî.

Rather, make us of those who, when given, say: Praise be to God; when withheld from, say: Praise be to God; when something is unveiled to them, say: Praise be to God; when inspired, say: Praise be to God; and when they find in their hearts the rest of remembrance, say: This is from the grace of my Lord.

Yâ Rabbi, inneke izâ eradte biabdin hayran, lem tu‘tıhi’n-ni‘mete vahdehâ, bel a‘taytehû aynen terâhâ, ve kalben yeşküruhâ, ve lisânen yahmedüke aleyhâ, ve kalemen yektübühâ, ve rûhan tescüdü beyne yedeyke min eserihâ.

O my Lord, when You intend good for a servant, You do not give him the blessing alone; rather You give him an eye that sees it, a heart that thanks it, a tongue that praises You for it, a pen that writes it, and a soul that prostrates before You from its effect.

Feleke’l-hamdü alâ mâ a‘tayt.

So to You be praise for what You gave. To You be praise for what You withheld. To You be praise for what You unveiled. To You be praise for what You concealed. To You be praise for what You inspired. And to You be praise for having taught us to praise You.

Allâhümme’c‘al hamdenâ leke lâ li’n-nâs, ve şükrenâ leke lâ li’l-manzar, ve kitâbetenâ leke lâ li’l-kibr, ve sükûnenâ bike lâ bi’l-esbâb.

O God, make our praise for You, not for people; our thanks for You, not for show; our writing for You, not for pride; and our stillness in You, not in the means.

Allâhümme innâ neşhedü enne’l-fadle fadlük, ve enne’n-ni‘mete ni‘metük, ve enne’l-hamde minke ve ileyk, ve enne’l-abde levlâ tevfîkuke mâ arafe keyfe yekûl: el-hamdü lillâh.

O God, we bear witness that the grace is Your grace, that the blessing is Your blessing, that praise is from You and to You, and that the servant — were it not for Your enabling — would not know how to say: Praise be to God.

Fec‘alnâ yâ Rabbi min ehli’l-hamd. Ve min ehli’ş-şükr. Ve min ehli’z-zikr. Ve min ehli’s-sükûni ileyk. Ve mine’llezîne izâ zîdû ni‘meten, zâdû tevâduâ. Ve izâ zîdû fehmen, zâdû hamdâ. Ve izâ zîdû fethan, zâdû sücûdâ.

So make us, O my Lord, of the people of praise; of the people of thanks; of the people of remembrance; of the people who find rest in You; and of those who, when increased in blessing, increase in humility; when increased in understanding, increase in praise; and when increased in openings, increase in prostration.

Hasbünallâhü ve ni‘me’l-vekîl. Ni‘me’l-mevlâ ve ni‘me’n-nasîr.

God is sufficient for us, and He is the best trustee. What an excellent Master, and what an excellent Helper.

Sübhâneke’llâhümme ve bihamdik. Neşhedü en lâ ilâhe illâ ent. Nesteğfiruke ve netûbü ileyk.

Glory be to You, O God, and with Your praise. We bear witness that there is no god but You. We seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.

Ve sallâ’llâhü alâ seyyidinâ Muhammedin, ve alâ âlihî ve sahbihî ecmaîn.

And may God bless our master Muhammad, and his family, and all his Companions.
