A hymn of praise and intimate prayer on our creation from nothing, and the stages by which we were shaped from a drop into a human being. With the Arabic original, transliteration, and English translation.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillâhi’r-rahmâni’r-rahîm
In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، حَمْدًا يَلِيقُ بِجَلَالِ وَجْهِهِ، وَعَظِيمِ سُلْطَانِهِ، وَسِعَةِ رَحْمَتِهِ، وَنُورِ حِكْمَتِهِ، وَخَفِيِّ تَدْبِيرِهِ، وَبَدِيعِ صُنْعِهِ فِي الْآفَاقِ وَالْأَنْفُسِ.
El-hamdü lillâhi rabbi’l-âlemîn, hamden yelîku bicelâli vechih, ve azîmi sultânih, ve seati rahmetih, ve nûri hikmetih, ve hafiyyi tedbîrih, ve bedîi sun‘ihî fi’l-âfâki ve’l-enfüs.
Praise belongs to God, Lord of the worlds — a praise befitting the majesty of His countenance, the greatness of His dominion, the vastness of His mercy, the light of His wisdom, the hiddenness of His governance, and the wondrousness of His artistry in the horizons and within the souls.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَمْ نَكُنْ شَيْئًا مَذْكُورًا، فَذَكَرَنَا فِي عِلْمِهِ، وَقَدَّرَنَا فِي حِكْمَتِهِ، وَأَخْرَجَنَا مِنْ ظُلْمَةِ الْعَدَمِ إِلَى نُورِ الْوُجُودِ، لَا لِحَاجَةٍ مِنْهُ إِلَيْنَا، وَلَكِنْ فَضْلًا مِنْهُ وَرَحْمَةً.
El-hamdü lillâhillezî lem nekün şey’en mezkûrâ, fezekeranâ fî ilmih, ve kadderanâ fî hikmetih, ve ahracenâ min zulmeti’l-ademi ilâ nûri’l-vücûd, lâ lihâcetin minhü ileynâ, ve lâkin fadlen minhü ve rahmeh.
Praise belongs to God, who — when we were nothing worth mentioning — remembered us in His knowledge, ordained us in His wisdom, and brought us out of the darkness of nonexistence into the light of existence; not out of any need He had of us, but out of His grace and mercy.
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي نَظَرَ إِلَى النُّطْفَةِ وَهِيَ مَاءٌ مَهِينٌ، فَجَعَلَ فِيهَا سِرَّ الْحَيَاةِ، وَأَودَعَ فِي قَطْرَةٍ صَغِيرَةٍ خَرَائِطَ الْجَسَدِ، وَمَسَالِكَ الْعَقْلِ، وَمَفَاتِيحَ النُّطْقِ، وَأَسْرَارَ الْبَصَرِ، وَرَعْشَةَ الْقَلْبِ، وَحَنِينَ الرُّوحِ إِلَى رَبِّهَا.
Sübhânellezî nazara ile’n-nutfeti ve hiye mâün mehîn, feceale fîhâ sirre’l-hayâh, ve evdea fî katratin sağîratin harâite’l-cesed, ve mesâlike’l-akl, ve mefâtîha’n-nutk, ve esrâra’l-basar, ve ra‘şete’l-kalb, ve hanîne’r-rûhi ilâ rabbihâ.
Glory be to the One who looked upon the drop of fluid while it was a lowly water, and placed within it the secret of life; who deposited in a small drop the maps of the body, the pathways of the mind, the keys of speech, the secrets of sight, the trembling of the heart, and the soul’s yearning for its Lord.
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ جَعَلَ النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً، وَالْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً، وَالْمُضْغَةَ عِظَامًا، ثُمَّ كَسَا الْعِظَامَ لَحْمًا، ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ خَلْقًا آخَرَ؛ فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ.
Sübhâne men ceale’n-nutfete alekah, ve’l-alekate mudğah, ve’l-mudğate izâmâ, sümme kese’l-izâme lahmâ, sümme enşee halkan âhar; fetebârekellâhü ahsenü’l-hâlikîn.
Glory be to the One who made the drop into a clinging clot, and the clot into a morsel of flesh, and the morsel into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, then brought it forth as another creation. So blessed is God, the best of creators.
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ جَعَلَ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ صَامِتَةٍ لِسَانًا يَذْكُرُهُ، وَمِنْ طِينٍ مُصَوَّرٍ قَلْبًا يَخْشَاهُ، وَمِنْ ضَعْفٍ مُرَكَّبٍ عَقْلًا يَعْرِفُهُ، وَمِنْ صَدْرٍ ضَيِّقٍ بَابًا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ، وَمِنْ دَمْعَةٍ صَغِيرَةٍ بَحْرًا مِنَ الْمُنَاجَاةِ.
Sübhâne men ceale min alekatin sâmiten lisânen yezküruh, ve min tînin musavverin kalben yahşâh, ve min da‘fin mürekkebin aklen ya‘rifuh, ve min sadrin dayyikin bâben ile’s-semâ’, ve min dem‘atin sağîratin bahran mine’l-münâcâh.
Glory be to the One who made, from a silent clot, a tongue that remembers Him; from shaped clay, a heart that fears Him; from an assembled weakness, a mind that knows Him; from a narrow breast, a door to heaven; and from a small teardrop, an ocean of intimate prayer.
إِلَهِي، كُنَّا فِي الْأَرْحَامِ لَا نَعْلَمُ اسْمًا، وَلَا نَمْلِكُ نَفَسًا، وَلَا نَسْتَطِيعُ دَفْعًا وَلَا جَلْبًا؛ فَكُنْتَ أَنْتَ الرَّازِقَ قَبْلَ أَنْ نَطْلُبَ، وَالْحَافِظَ قَبْلَ أَنْ نَفْهَمَ، وَالرَّحِيمَ قَبْلَ أَنْ نَبْكِيَ، وَالْقَرِيبَ قَبْلَ أَنْ نُنَادِيَ.
İlâhî, künnâ fi’l-erhâmi lâ na‘lemü ismâ, ve lâ nemlikü nefesâ, ve lâ nestatîu def‘an ve lâ celbâ; fekünte ente’r-râzika kable en natlübe, ve’l-hâfiza kable en nefheme, ve’r-rahîme kable en nebkiye, ve’l-karîbe kable en nünâdî.
My God, in the wombs we knew no name, possessed no breath, and could neither ward off harm nor draw benefit; yet You were the Provider before we asked, the Preserver before we understood, the Merciful before we wept, and the Near before we called.
يَا مَنْ خَلَقَ الْعَيْنَ مِنْ ظُلْمَةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَهَا تَرَى النُّورَ، وَخَلَقَ الْأُذُنَ مِنْ صَمْتٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَهَا تَسْمَعُ الْكَلِمَةَ، وَخَلَقَ الْقَلْبَ مِنْ لَحْمٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَهُ عَرْشًا لِلْمَحَبَّةِ وَالْخَوْفِ وَالرَّجَاءِ.
Yâ men halaka’l-ayne min zulmetin sümme cealehâ tera’n-nûr, ve halaka’l-üzüne min samtin sümme cealehâ tesmeu’l-kelimeh, ve halaka’l-kalbe min lahmin sümme cealehû arşen li’l-mahabbeti ve’l-havfi ve’r-recâ.
O You who created the eye from darkness, then made it see the light; who created the ear from silence, then made it hear the word; who created the heart from flesh, then made it a throne for love, and fear, and hope.
يَا مَنْ أَجْرَى الدَّمَ فِي الْعُرُوقِ بِلَا أَمْرٍ مِنَّا، وَأَنْبَتَ الْعَظْمَ فِي الْخَفَاءِ بِلَا عِلْمٍ مِنَّا، وَرَتَّبَ الْأَعْضَاءَ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ الثَّلَاثِ بِلَا حَوْلٍ مِنَّا وَلَا قُوَّةٍ؛ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَتَّى تَرْضَى، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ إِذَا رَضِيتَ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ بَعْدَ الرِّضَا.
Yâ men ecra’d-deme fi’l-urûki bilâ emrin minnâ, ve enbete’l-azme fi’l-hafâi bilâ ilmin minnâ, ve rettebe’l-a‘dâe fi’z-zulümâti’s-selâsi bilâ havlin minnâ ve lâ kuvveh; leke’l-hamdü hattâ terdâ, ve leke’l-hamdü izâ radîte, ve leke’l-hamdü ba‘de’r-rıdâ.
O You who set the blood coursing through the veins without any command from us, and grew the bone in secret without any knowledge from us, and arranged the limbs within the three darknesses without any might or power from us: to You be praise until You are pleased, to You be praise when You are pleased, and to You be praise after Your pleasure.
إِلَهِي، أَيُّ لِسَانٍ يَبْلُغُ ثَنَاءَكَ؟ وَأَيُّ قَلْبٍ يُحِيطُ بِآلَائِكَ؟ وَأَيُّ عَقْلٍ يَزِنُ حِكْمَتَكَ؟ وَأَيُّ مَلَكٍ يُحْصِي عَطَايَاكَ؟ وَأَيُّ نَبِيٍّ، وَهُوَ أَعْرَفُ الْخَلْقِ بِكَ، إِلَّا وَقَدْ قَالَ: لَا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ، أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ.
İlâhî, eyyü lisânin yeblüğu senâek? Ve eyyü kalbin yuhîtu biâlâik? Ve eyyü aklin yezinü hikmetek? Ve eyyü melekin yuhsî atâyâk? Ve eyyü nebiyyin, ve hüve a‘rafü’l-halki bik, illâ ve kad kâle: lâ uhsî senâen aleyk, ente kemâ esneyte alâ nefsik.
My God, what tongue can attain Your praise? What heart can encompass Your bounties? What mind can weigh Your wisdom? What angel can number Your gifts? And what prophet — and he is the most knowing of creation concerning You — but has said: “I cannot enumerate praise of You; You are as You have praised Yourself.”
فَسُبْحَانَكَ، مَا أَعْظَمَكَ حِينَ تُخْرِجُ الْحَيَّ مِنَ الْمَيِّتِ، وَمَا أَلْطَفَكَ حِينَ تُرَبِّي الْجَنِينَ فِي سِتْرِ الرَّحِمِ، وَمَا أَكْرَمَكَ حِينَ تُعْطِي الْعَبْدَ عَقْلًا ثُمَّ تَهْدِيهِ أَنْ يَعْرِفَ أَنَّ الْعَقْلَ مِنْكَ، وَمَا أَرْحَمَكَ حِينَ تُعْطِيهِ قُدْرَةً ثُمَّ تُنْقِذُهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَغْتَرَّ بِهَا.
Fesübhâneke, mâ a‘zameke hîne tuhricü’l-hayye mine’l-meyyit, ve mâ eltafeke hîne türabbi’l-cenîne fî sitri’r-rahim, ve mâ ekremeke hîne tu‘ti’l-abde aklen sümme tehdîhi en ya‘rife enne’l-akle mink, ve mâ erhameke hîne tu‘tîhi kudraten sümme tünkizuhû min en yağterre bihâ.
So glory be to You: how great You are when You bring forth the living from the dead; how gentle You are when You nurture the embryo in the veil of the womb; how generous You are when You give a servant a mind, then guide him to know that the mind is from You; and how merciful You are when You give him power, then rescue him from being deluded by it.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَحْمَدُكَ حَمْدَ الْمُقِرِّينَ بِالْعَجْزِ عَنْ حَمْدِكَ، وَنُسَبِّحُكَ تَسْبِيحَ مَنْ عَلِمَ أَنَّ تَسْبِيحَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِنْكَ، وَنَشْكُرُكَ شُكْرَ مَنْ لَا يَمْلِكُ مِنَ الشُّكْرِ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَهُ، وَلَا مِنَ الْحَمْدِ إِلَّا مَا أَجْرَيْتَهُ عَلَى لِسَانِهِ.
Allâhümme innâ nahmedüke hamde’l-mukırrîne bi’l-aczi an hamdik, ve nüsebbihuke tesbîha men alime enne tesbîhahû ni‘metün mink, ve neşküruke şükra men lâ yemlikü mine’ş-şükri illâ mâ allemteh, ve lâ mine’l-hamdi illâ mâ ecreytehû alâ lisânih.
O God, we praise You with the praise of those who confess their inability to praise You; we glorify You with the glorification of one who knows that his very glorifying is a blessing from You; and we thank You with the thanks of one who possesses of thankfulness only what You have taught him, and of praise only what You have made flow upon his tongue.
يَا رَبِّ، مَا كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ عِلْمٍ فَمِنْكَ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ فَهْمٍ فَبِنُورِكَ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ قُوَّةٍ فَبِحَوْلِكَ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ تَدْبِيرٍ فَبِإِذْنِكَ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَبِفَضْلِكَ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ سِتْرٍ فَبِرَحْمَتِكَ.
Yâ Rabbi, mâ kâne minnâ min ilmin feminke, ve mâ kâne minnâ min fehmin febinûrik, ve mâ kâne minnâ min kuvvetin febihavlik, ve mâ kâne minnâ min tedbîrin febiiznik, ve mâ kâne minnâ min hayrin febifadlik, ve mâ kâne minnâ min sitrin febirahmetik.
O my Lord, whatever knowledge is in us is from You; whatever understanding, by Your light; whatever strength, by Your power; whatever planning, by Your leave; whatever good, by Your grace; and whatever concealment of our faults, by Your mercy.
فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى أَنْ خَلَقْتَنَا بَعْدَ أَنْ لَمْ نَكُنْ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى أَنْ صَوَّرْتَنَا فَأَحْسَنْتَ صُوَرَنَا، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى أَنْ رَزَقْتَنَا فِي الْبَطْنِ وَنَحْنُ غَافِلُونَ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى أَنْ أَخْرَجْتَنَا إِلَى الدُّنْيَا وَنَحْنُ ضُعَفَاءُ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى أَنْ سَتَرْتَنَا وَنَحْنُ مُقَصِّرُونَ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى أَنْ دَعَوْتَنَا إِلَيْكَ وَنَحْنُ هَارِبُونَ.
Feleke’l-hamdü alâ en halaktenâ ba‘de en lem nekün, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ en savvertenâ feahsente suveranâ, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ en razaktenâ fi’l-batni ve nahnü ğâfilûn, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ en ahractenâ ile’d-dünyâ ve nahnü duafâ’, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ en setertenâ ve nahnü mükassırûn, ve leke’l-hamdü alâ en deavtenâ ileyke ve nahnü hâribûn.
To You be praise for creating us after we were nothing; to You be praise for shaping us and making our forms beautiful; to You be praise for sustaining us in the womb while we were heedless; to You be praise for bringing us into the world while we were weak; to You be praise for covering us while we were falling short; and to You be praise for calling us to Yourself while we were fleeing.
سُبْحَانَكَ يَا مَنْ جَعَلَ مِنَ الْعَلَقَةِ إِنْسَانًا، وَمِنَ الْإِنْسَانِ عَابِدًا، وَمِنَ الْعَابِدِ عَارِفًا، وَمِنَ الْعَارِفِ مُحِبًّا، وَمِنَ الْمُحِبِّ دَمْعَةً تَقُولُ مَا عَجَزَتْ عَنْهُ الْأَلْسِنَةُ.
Sübhâneke yâ men ceale mine’l-alekati insânâ, ve mine’l-insâni âbidâ, ve mine’l-âbidi ârifâ, ve mine’l-ârifi muhibbâ, ve mine’l-muhibbi dem‘aten tekûlü mâ aceze anhü’l-elsineh.
Glory be to You, O You who made from a clinging clot a human being, from the human a worshipper, from the worshipper a knower, from the knower a lover, and from the lover a teardrop that says what tongues are unable to say.
رَبَّنَا، هَذَا ثَنَاؤُنَا عَلَيْكَ، وَهُوَ قَلِيلٌ فِي حَقِّكَ، ضَعِيفٌ أَمَامَ جَلَالِكَ، مَحْدُودٌ أَمَامَ كَمَالِكَ؛ فَاقْبَلْهُ مِنَّا بِفَضْلِكَ، لَا بِقَدْرِهِ، وَارْفَعْهُ إِلَيْكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ، لَا بِاسْتِحْقَاقِنَا.
Rabbenâ, hâzâ senâünâ aleyk, ve hüve kalîlün fî hakkik, daîfün emâme celâlik, mahdûdün emâme kemâlik; fakbelhü minnâ bifadlik, lâ bikadrih, verfa‘hü ileyke birahmetik, lâ bistihkâkinâ.
Our Lord, this is our praise of You — and it is little beside Your due, weak before Your majesty, limited before Your perfection; so accept it from us by Your grace, not by its measure, and raise it to Yourself by Your mercy, not by our deserving.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ عَقْلَنَا شَاهِدًا لَكَ، وَلِسَانَنَا ذَاكِرًا لَكَ، وَقَلْبَنَا خَاشِعًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ، وَعَمَلَنَا خَالِصًا لِوَجْهِكَ، وَقُوَّتَنَا مُعْتَرِفَةً بِحَوْلِكَ، وَنَجَاحَنَا مَرْدُودًا إِلَى فَضْلِكَ، وَكُلَّ مَا نَفْعَلُهُ شَاهِدًا أَنَّهُ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِكَ.
Allâhümme’c‘al aklenâ şâhiden lek, ve lisânenâ zâkiren lek, ve kalbenâ hâşian beyne yedeyk, ve amelenâ hâlisan livechik, ve kuvvetenâ mu‘terifeten bihavlik, ve necâhanâ merdûden ilâ fadlik, ve külle mâ nef‘alühû şâhiden ennehû lâ havle ve lâ kuvvete illâ bik.
O God, make our mind a witness to You, our tongue a rememberer of You, our heart humble before You, our deeds sincere for Your face, our strength confessing Your power, our success referred back to Your grace, and everything we do a witness that there is no might and no power except through You.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّى، وَقَدَّرَ فَهَدَى، وَأَعْطَى فَأَغْنَى، وَسَتَرَ فَعَفَا، وَأَلْهَمَ فَأَحْيَا، وَدَعَا فَقَرَّبَ، وَرَزَقَ فَأَكْرَمَ.
El-hamdü lillâhillezî halaka fesevvâ, ve kaddera fehedâ, ve a‘tâ feağnâ, ve setera feafâ, ve elheme feahyâ, ve deâ fekarrabe, ve razaka feekrame.
Praise belongs to God, who created and proportioned, ordained and guided, gave and enriched, concealed and pardoned, inspired and gave life, called and brought near, provided and honored.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ أَوَّلًا وَآخِرًا، ظَاهِرًا وَبَاطِنًا، سِرًّا وَعَلَانِيَةً، فِي الْبَدْءِ وَالْمُنْتَهَى، فِي النُّطْفَةِ وَالْعَلَقَةِ، فِي الْقَلْبِ وَالنَّفَسِ، فِي الدَّمْعَةِ وَالسُّجُودِ، فِي الْعِلْمِ وَالْعَجْزِ، فِي الْقُوَّةِ وَالِافْتِقَارِ.
El-hamdü lillâhi evvelen ve âhirâ, zâhiren ve bâtınâ, sirran ve alâniyeh, fi’l-bed’i ve’l-müntehâ, fi’n-nutfeti ve’l-alekah, fi’l-kalbi ve’n-nefes, fi’d-dem‘ati ve’s-sücûd, fi’l-ilmi ve’l-acz, fi’l-kuvveti ve’l-iftikâr.
Praise belongs to God, first and last, outwardly and inwardly, in secret and in the open, at the beginning and at the end, in the drop and in the clot, in the heart and in the breath, in the tear and in the prostration, in knowledge and in incapacity, in strength and in utter need.
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا الْعَلِيِّ الْأَعْلَى، سُبْحَانَ مَنْ لَا يُحَاطُ بِجَلَالِهِ، وَلَا يُدْرَكُ كُنْهُ كَمَالِهِ، وَلَا يَبْلُغُ عَبْدٌ مِدْحَتَهُ، وَلَا يَسْتَوْفِي خَلْقٌ حَمْدَهُ.
Sübhâne rabbine’l-aliyyi’l-a‘lâ, sübhâne men lâ yuhâtu bicelâlih, ve lâ yüdrekü künhü kemâlih, ve lâ yeblüğu abdün midhateh, ve lâ yestevfî halkun hamdeh.
Glory be to our Lord, the Exalted, the Most High; glory be to the One whose majesty cannot be encompassed, the essence of whose perfection cannot be grasped, whose praise no servant can attain, and whose due of praise no creature can fully render.
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، سُبْحَانَكَ، إِنَّا كُنَّا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ.
Lâ ilâhe illâ ente, sübhâneke, innâ künnâ mine’z-zâlimîn.
There is no god but You; glory be to You; truly we were among the wrongdoers.
وَصَلِّ اللَّهُمَّ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ، عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ، وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ، وَسَلِّمْ تَسْلِيمًا كَثِيرًا.
Ve salli’llâhümme alâ seyyidinâ Muhammedin, abdike ve rasûlik, ve alâ âlihî ve sahbih, ve sellim teslîmen kesîrâ.
And send blessings, O God, upon our master Muhammad, Your servant and Your Messenger, and upon his family and his Companions, and grant them abundant peace.
