The Supplication of Blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ

The Door of Mercy and the Secret of Following

A münâcât of sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ: that love be a deed, not a claim, and following be a covenant in the heart and uprightness in action, not mere words. With the Arabic original, transliteration, and English translation.

Bismillâhi’r-rahmâni’r-rahîm

In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.

Praise belongs to God, who guided us to Himself through His Messenger, made us know His mercy through His Beloved, and opened for us, from the light of Muhammad ﷺ, a door to knowing Him; and who made blessings upon him a path to nearness, a key to mercy, and a covenant bound to courtesy (adab).

Allâhümme salli alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, salâten tuhricünâ bihâ min dîki enfüsinâ ilâ seati rahmetik, ve min zulmeti gafletinâ ilâ nûri zikrik, ve min da‘ve’l-ameli ilâ hakîkati’l-istiâneh, ve min ucbi’l-fehmi ilâ edebi’l-ubûdiyyeh.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — a blessing by which You bring us out from the narrowness of our souls to the vastness of Your mercy, from the darkness of our heedlessness to the light of Your remembrance, from the claim of action to the reality of seeking Your help, and from the conceit of understanding to the courtesy of servanthood.

Allâhümme salli alâ men kânet hayâtühû beyânen li’l-Kur’ân, ve hulukuhû mir’âten li’r-rahmeh, ve sükûtühû hikmeh, ve kelâmühû hüdâ, ve dem‘uhû haşyeh, ve cihâdühû rahmeh, ve afvühû kudrah, ve fakruhû ileyke gınen an külli mâ sivâk.

O God, send blessings upon the one whose life was an exposition of the Qur'an, whose character was a mirror of mercy, whose silence was wisdom, whose speech was guidance, whose tears were awe, whose striving was mercy, whose pardon was power, and whose poverty before You was a richness beyond all that is other than You.

O God, send blessings upon the Prophet who taught us to fear You without despairing of You, to hope in You without feeling safe from the scheming of our own souls, to act without being deluded, to do good without laying claim, to seek forgiveness without falling into despair, and to say in every matter: You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.

Allâhümme salli alâ men arafeke hakka’l-ma‘rifeh, fezdâde huşûâ, ve karube minke fezdâde edebâ, ve fütiha lehû fezdâde hamdâ, ve nusira fezdâde tevâduâ, ve gufira lehû mâ tekaddeme min zenbihî ve mâ teahhar, fekâme hattâ tefattarat kademâhü şükran lek.

O God, send blessings upon the one who knew You with true knowledge, and so increased in humility; who drew near to You, and so increased in courtesy; to whom things were opened, and so increased in praise; who was granted victory, and so increased in humbleness; whose past and future sins were forgiven, yet he stood [in prayer] until his feet cracked, in thankfulness to You.

Allâhümme salli alâ men lem yekün nûruhû hicâben ank, bel kâne delîlen aleyk, ve lem tekün mahabbetühû bedelen min ibâdetik, bel kânet tarîkan ilâ tâatik, ve lem yeküni’ttibâuhû sûraten ale’l-lisân, bel kâne ahden fi’l-kalbi ve amelen fi’l-cevârih.

O God, send blessings upon the one whose light was not a veil from You but a proof pointing to You; whose love was not a substitute for worshipping You but a path to obeying You; and whose following was not a mere form upon the tongue but a covenant in the heart and a deed in the limbs.

Allâhümme salli alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, ellezî cealtehû rahmeten li’l-âlemîn, fekânet rahmetühû leyset lînen bilâ hakk, ve lâ hakkan bilâ rahmeh, bel mîzânen min nûr, yedau külle şey’in fî mevdıih, ve yerüddü külle kalbin ilâ rabbih.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad, whom You made a mercy to the worlds — a mercy that was neither softness without truth, nor truth without mercy, but a balance of light: placing everything in its rightful place, and returning every heart to its Lord.

Allâhümme salli alâ men izâ nazarnâ ilâ sünnetihî raeynâ keyfe yekûnü’l-abdü abdâ, ve keyfe yekûnü’l-kaviyyü rahîmâ, ve’l-müntesıru şâkirâ, ve’l-hâkimü âdilâ, ve’z-zâhidü âmilâ, ve’l-âlimü mütevâdıâ, ve’l-hâifü mutmainnâ, ve’l-muhibbü müttebiâ.

O God, send blessings upon the one at whose Sunnah, when we look, we see how a servant should be a servant; how the strong should be merciful, the victor thankful, the ruler just, the ascetic active, the scholar humble, the fearful at peace, and the lover a follower.

Allâhümme salli alâ men allemenâ enne’l-ilme izâ lem yezid sâhibehû haşyeten fehüve hüccetün aleyh, ve enne’l-fetha izâ lem yezid sâhibehû hamden fehüve fitnetün leh, ve enne’n-ni‘mete izâ lem tekud ile’ş-şükri sârat hicâbâ, ve enne’l-kudrate izâ lem tusraf fi’l-hakkı sârat tuğyânâ.

O God, send blessings upon the one who taught us that knowledge, if it does not increase its owner in awe, becomes a proof against him; that an opening [of success], if it does not increase its owner in praise, becomes a trial for him; that a blessing, if it does not lead to gratitude, becomes a veil; and that power, if it is not spent in the truth, becomes tyranny.

Allâhümme salli alâ men cema‘te fîhi cemâle’l-huluki ve celâle’l-emâneh, fekâne erhame’n-nâsi bi’n-nâs, ve eşeddehüm kıyâmen bihakkık, ve evseahüm sadran li’l-halk, ve asdekahüm fakran ileyk, ve ekmelehüm hamden lek.

O God, send blessings upon the one in whom You joined the beauty of character and the majesty of trustworthiness — so he was the most merciful of people toward people, the most steadfast of them in upholding Your right, the most expansive of them in heart toward creation, the most sincere of them in poverty before You, and the most complete of them in praise of You.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — the blessing of a servant who claims no station, seeks no prominence, and does not make blessings upon him an ornament of the tongue without following; but rather makes them a covenant: to be schooled in his courtesy, to be lit by his light, and to walk behind him toward You.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing by which You purify in us the meaning of love, so that it not become a claim; refine in us the meaning of following, so that it not become a mere form; set right in us the meaning of knowledge, so that it not become pride; and elevate in us the meaning of action, so that it not become a veil.

Allâhümme salli alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, salâten neteallemü bihâ keyfe nerüddü külle ni‘metin ileyk, ve külle fethin ilâ fadlik, ve külle kuvvetin ilâ havlik, ve külle necâhin ilâ tevfîkık, ve külle havfin ilâ edebik, ve külle emelin ilâ rahmetik.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — a blessing by which we learn how to return every blessing to You, every opening to Your grace, every strength to Your power, every success to Your enabling, every fear to reverence before You, and every hope to Your mercy.

Allâhümme salli alâ men kâne izâ hâfe feileyk, ve izâ recâ fefîk, ve izâ amile febik, ve izâ hamide felek, ve izâ secede febeyne yedeyk, ve izâ bekâ femin haşyetik, ve izâ sekete fealâ edebin meak.

O God, send blessings upon the one who, when he feared, feared toward You; when he hoped, hoped in You; when he acted, acted by You; when he praised, praised You; when he prostrated, prostrated before You; when he wept, wept from awe of You; and when he fell silent, was silent upon a courtesy with You.

O God, send blessings upon him — whenever we forget and You remind us, whenever we grow heedless and You awaken us, whenever we are given and You inspire in us gratitude, whenever something is opened to us and You protect us from self-claim, and whenever we are constricted and You expand us through good opinion of You.

Allâhümme salli aleyhi salâten tec‘alünâ na‘rifü enne mahabbetehû leyset hurûben mine’t-teklîf, bel dühûlün fî a‘maki’t-teklîf, ve leyset râhaten li’n-nefs, bel terbiyetün lehâ, ve leyset kelimeten tükâl, bel sıdkun yümtehanü fi’l-huluki ve’l-ameli ve’s-sabri ve’l-hakk.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing that makes us know that his love is not a flight from [religious] obligation, but an entering into the deepest of obligation; not a comfort for the ego, but a schooling of it; not a word to be spoken, but a truthfulness tested in character, deed, patience, and truth.

Allâhümme salli alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, mâ dâme fi’l-kalbi şevkun ile’l-hakk, ve mâ dâme fi’l-lisâni hamdün li’r-rabb, ve mâ dâme fi’l-ayni dem‘un mine’l-haşyeh, ve mâ dâme fi’l-akli talebün li’l-fehm, ve mâ dâme fi’l-abdi fakrun ilâ mevlâh.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — as long as there is in the heart a longing for the truth, and in the tongue praise of the Lord, and in the eye a tear of awe, and in the mind a seeking of understanding, and in the servant a poverty toward his Master.

Allâhümme salli aleyhi salâten tünzilü alâ kulûbinâ sekînete’l-ittibâ‘, ve alâ elsinetinâ sıdka’z-zikr, ve alâ a‘mâlinâ nûra’l-ihlâs, ve alâ niyyâtinâ hırâsete’l-edeb, ve alâ hatavâtinâ istikâmete’t-tarîk.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing that sends down upon our hearts the tranquility of following, upon our tongues the truthfulness of remembrance, upon our deeds the light of sincerity, upon our intentions the guarding of courtesy, and upon our steps the straightness of the path.

Allâhümme salli aleyhi salâten tuallimünâ enne’t-tarîka ileyke leyse bi’l-kuvveti vahdehâ, ve lâ bi’z-zekâi vahdeh, ve lâ bi’l-ameli vahdeh, ve lâkin birahmetike evvelâ, sümme bisıdki’l-ittibâ‘, ve hüsni’l-istiâneh, ve devâmi’l-hamd, ve selâmeti’l-kalb.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing that teaches us that the path to You is not by strength alone, nor by cleverness alone, nor by action alone, but by Your mercy first, then by the truthfulness of following, the excellence of seeking help, the constancy of praise, and the soundness of the heart.

O God, send blessings upon the Prophet whom You made an example — and do not make us of those who mention him yet do not take him as a model, who praise him yet oppose his guidance, or who multiply blessings upon him while their hearts are far from his courtesy.

O God, send blessings upon him, and make our blessing upon him a light in understanding, a tenderness in the heart, truthfulness on the tongue, trustworthiness in action, modesty in the inward, uprightness in the outward, mercy toward creation, and a sincere poverty toward You.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — a blessing by which souls are returned from dispersion to a single direction, from hardness to mercy, from heedlessness to remembrance, from boasting to gratitude, and from dark fear to luminous awe.

Allâhümme salli aleyhi salâten tec‘alü hubbehû fînâ amelâ, ve zikrehû fînâ hayâen, ve’ttibâahû fînâ istikâmeh, ve sünnetehû fînâ nûrâ, ve şefâatehû lenâ recâen, ve havdahû lenâ mev‘idâ, ve civârehû lenâ ünsâ, ve rıdâke annâ gâyeh.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing that makes his love in us a deed, his remembrance in us a modesty, his following in us an uprightness, his Sunnah in us a light, his intercession for us a hope, his Pool (Ḥawḍ) for us a promised meeting, his nearness for us an intimacy, and Your good pleasure with us the ultimate goal.

Allâhümme salli alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, küllemâ kâle abdün: Bismillâh, fetalebe bihe’l-bed’e bik, ve küllemâ kâle: El-hamdü lillâh, feradde bihe’n-ni‘mete ileyk, ve küllemâ kâle: Hasbünallâhü ve ni‘me’l-vekîl, feselleme bihe’l-emre ileyk, ve küllemâ kâle: İyyâke na‘büdü ve iyyâke nesteîn, fe-arafe bihâ makâmehû beyne yedeyk.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — whenever a servant says "In the name of God," seeking thereby to begin with You; and whenever he says "Praise be to God," returning thereby the blessing to You; and whenever he says "God is sufficient for us, and He is the best trustee," surrendering thereby the affair to You; and whenever he says "You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help," knowing thereby his station before You.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing that revives in us the meaning of servanthood, dissolves in us the illusion of self-sufficiency, breaks in us the pride of action, and establishes in us the courtesy of praise; and that makes us, when we grow strong, merciful; when things are opened to us, humble; and when we are given victory, thankful.

Allâhümme salli alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, salâten tekûnü lenâ bâben ilâ rahmetik, ve hısnen min ucbi enfüsinâ, ve mir’âten nerâ fîhâ naksanâ, ve nûran nerâ bihî tarîkanâ, ve ahden nerciu bihî min külli da‘vâ ilâ sücûd.

O God, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — a blessing that is for us a door to Your mercy, a fortress against the conceit of our souls, a mirror in which we see our deficiency, a light by which we see our path, and a covenant by which we return from every self-claim to prostration.

Allâhümme salli aleyhi salâten lâ nec‘alühâ hâtimete kelâmin fakat, bel fâtihate tehavvülin fi’l-kalb, ve lâ zînete meclisin fakat, bel beyyinete sıdkın fi’l-hayâh, ve lâ âdeten tecrî ale’l-lisâni fakat, bel rücûan ile’l-hedyi ve’r-rahmeti ve’l-edeb.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing we do not make merely the ending of a speech, but the opening of a transformation in the heart; not merely the ornament of a gathering, but the proof of truthfulness in life; not merely a habit running upon the tongue, but a returning to guidance, mercy, and courtesy.

Allâhümme salli ve sellim ve bârik alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, abdike ve rasûlik, ve habîbike ve safiyyik, ve’n-nûrillezî deleltenâ bihî alâ nûrik, ve’r-rahmetilletî arrafetenâ bihâ rahmetek, ve’l-abdillezî allemenâ keyfe nekûnü ibâden lek.

O God, send blessings, peace, and benediction upon our master Muhammad — Your servant and Your Messenger, Your beloved and Your chosen one; the light by which You guided us to Your light, the mercy by which You made us know Your mercy, and the servant who taught us how to be servants to You.

O God, send blessings upon him — a blessing by which You are pleased with us, set right what is between us and You, forgive what has issued from us, preserve what You have opened to us, and make the end of our affair goodness, the end of our speech praise, and the end of our journey a meeting with You in [Your] good pleasure.

Ve salli’llâhümme alâ âlihi’t-tâhirîn, ve ashâbihi’l-mühtedîn, ve men tebiahüm biihsânin ilâ yevmi’d-dîn.

And send blessings, O God, upon his pure family, his rightly-guided Companions, and those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment.

Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Might, above what they ascribe. And peace be upon the messengers. And praise belongs to God, Lord of the worlds.
