Who Crushed the Serpent's Head
The Servant Is Saved from Himself Only by His Lord
Seeing the ego’s disease, crushing it, and being saved from it are all a blessing: the servant is saved from himself only through his Lord — not «I crushed» but «God crushed», and even being purified of seeing that one was purified. «Except those on whom my Lord has mercy.» The Arabic original with transliteration and English translation.
Bismillâhi’r-rahmâni’r-rahîm
In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.
Ve’l-hamdü lillâh, ve lillâhi’l-hamd.
And praise belongs to God; and to God alone belongs all praise.
El-hamdü lillâhillezî lâ yektefî bien yüriye’l-abde âfete nefsih, bel yürîhi enne ru’yete’l-âfeti ni‘metün minh, ve enne kerâhiyete’l-âfeti ni‘metün minh, ve enne sahkahâ kable en testefhıle rahmetün minh, ve enne şühûde zâlike küllihî fadlün minh.
Praise belongs to God, who is not content merely to show the servant the disease of his own self, but shows him that the very seeing of the disease is a blessing from Him, that the disliking of the disease is a blessing from Him, that its crushing before it worsens is a mercy from Him, and that the witnessing of all this is a bounty from Him.
El-hamdü lillâhillezî izâ erâde biabdin hayran, lem yetruki’l-hayyete tekbüru fî zulmeti’l-kalb, ve lem yetruk ra’sehâ yahtebiu tahte sevbi’t-tâah, ve lem yetruk semmehâ yemtezicü bihalâveti’l-hamd, bel ahracehâ sağîraten, ve keşefehâ âriyeten, ve sehakahâ binûri’t-tevhîd, sümme kâle li’l-kalbi bilâ harfin ve lâ savt:
Praise belongs to God, who — when He wills good for a servant — does not leave the serpent to grow in the darkness of the heart, does not leave its head to hide beneath the garment of obedience, and does not leave its venom to mingle with the sweetness of praise; rather, He brings it out while small, exposes it bare, crushes it with the light of divine oneness, and then says to the heart, without letter or sound:
Leste ente’llezî raeyt. Ve leste ente’llezî sehakt. Ve leste ente’llezî necevt. Ve lâkinnî ene eraytük, ve ene hameytük, ve ene kefeytük.
“It is not you who saw. It is not you who crushed. It is not you who were saved. Rather, it is I who showed you, I who protected you, I who sufficed you.”
Yâ Rabb, künnâ nezunnü enne’l-yakazate en nera’l-hayyeh. Sümme allemtenâ enne’l-yakazate’l-etemme en nerâ men erânâhâ.
O my Lord, we used to suppose that wakefulness was to see the serpent. Then You taught us that the fuller wakefulness is to see the One who showed it to us.
Sümme allemtenâ enne’n-necâte’l-asfâ en nerâ men sehakahâ.
And we used to suppose that deliverance was to crush its head. Then You taught us that the purer deliverance is to see the One who crushed it.
And we used to suppose that purity was that no portion remain for the ego. Then You taught us that the ego may take a portion from the very beholding of purity itself.
Fesübhâne men yütahhirü’l-abde mine’l-ucb, sümme yütahhiruhû mine’l-ucbi biennehû tetahhar. Ve sübhâne men yümîtü’l-hayyeh, sümme yümîtü fi’l-abdi ru’yete ennehû kâtilühâ.
Glory be to the One who purifies the servant from self-conceit, then purifies him from the self-conceit of having been purified. Glory be to the One who effaces the claim, then effaces the claim of effacement. Glory be to the One who slays the serpent, then slays within the servant the seeing that he was its slayer.
Ve levlâ fadlu’llâhi aleyküm ve rahmetühû mâ zekâ minküm min ehadin ebedâ, ve lâkinne’llâhe yüzekkî men yeşâ’.
“And were it not for the grace of God upon you and His mercy, not one of you would ever have been purified; but God purifies whom He wills.” (an-Nûr, 21)
Neam yâ Rabb. Levlâ fadluke ve rahmetüke mâ zekâ minnâ ehadün ebedâ.
Yes, O my Lord. Were it not for Your grace and Your mercy, not one of us would ever have been purified.
Lâ tezkû niyyetün bikuvveti sâhıbihâ. Ve lâ yasfû kalbün bihîleti sâkinih. Ve lâ yemûtü ucbün biseyfi’l-abd. Ve lâ tüshaku hayyetü’n-nefsi illâ izâ sebekathâ rahmetüke, ve ehâta bihâ nûrüke, ve nezele aleyhâ hukmük.
No intention is purified by the strength of its owner. No heart is made clear by the cunning of the one dwelling within it. No self-conceit dies by the sword of the servant. And the serpent of the ego is not crushed unless Your mercy has gone before it, Your light has surrounded it, and Your decree has descended upon it.
Ente tüzekkî men teşâ’. Ve ente tütahhiru men teşâ’. Ve ente tahfezu men teşâ’.
You purify whom You will. You cleanse whom You will. You protect whom You will. And You slay in the ego that which, had You left it alive, would have corrupted for the servant his obedience, his praise, his understanding, his writing, and his nearness — until he would make nearness a veil, praise a ladder to his own self, and light a garment for his darkness.
Yâ Rabb, mâ ahfâ hâzihi’l-hayyeh. Tahrucü ahyânen min sikbi’z-zenb, feya‘rifühe’l-abd. Ve tahrucü ahyânen min tahte seccâdeti’t-tâah, feyağfülü anhâ. Tahrucü mine’l-ma‘sıyeti kabîhaten, feyefirru minhe’l-kalb. Ve tahrucü mine’t-tâati müzeyyeneten, feyezunnühe’l-kalbü kerâmeh.
O my Lord, how hidden is this serpent. Sometimes it comes out from the hole of sin, and the servant recognizes it. Sometimes it comes out from beneath the prayer-mat of obedience, and he is heedless of it. It emerges from disobedience as something ugly, and the heart flees from it. And it emerges from obedience adorned, and the heart supposes it a mark of honour.
Tekûlü li’l-abd: unzur keyfe hamidt. Unzur keyfe fehimt. Unzur keyfe raeyt. Unzur keyfe suhıkat alâ yedik.
It says to the servant: Look how you praised. Look how you understood. Look how you saw. Look how it was crushed at your hand.
Feizâ sebekat rahmetüke, kulte li’l-kalb:
But when Your mercy goes before it, You say to the heart:
Lâ tenzur ilâ yedik. Unzur ilâ men harrakahâ. Lâ tenzur ilâ basîratik. Unzur ilâ men fetahahâ. Lâ tenzur ilâ tahâratik. Unzur ilâ men setara kazareke ve tahharek. Lâ tenzur ile’l-hayyeti ba‘de mevtihâ. Unzur ilâ Rabbin lem yetruk-hâ tekbür.
Do not look at your hand; look at the One who moved it. Do not look at your inner sight; look at the One who opened it. Do not look at your purity; look at the One who covered your filth and purified you. Do not look at the serpent after its death; look at a Lord who did not leave it to grow.
Ve mâ biküm min ni‘metin femina’llâh.
“And whatever blessing you have — it is from God.” (an-Nahl, 53)
Fe’l-yakazatü ni‘meh. Ve’l-havfü ale’l-kalbi ni‘meh. Ve’n-nüfûru mine’l-ucbi ni‘meh. Ve’r-rucûu min ru’yeti’n-nefsi ni‘meh. Ve sahku’l-hayyeti ni‘meh. Ve ru’yetü enne’s-sâhıka hüva’llâhü ni‘meh. Ve’l-hamdü alâ hâzihi’r-ru’yeti ni‘meh.
So wakefulness is a blessing. Fear for the heart is a blessing. Aversion to self-conceit is a blessing. Returning from the sight of the self is a blessing. The crushing of the serpent is a blessing. Seeing that the Crusher is God is a blessing. And praise for this very sight is a blessing.
So from where would the ego take a share? And from where would the servant say, “I”? For every door God has opened for him — when he enters it truthfully — he finds written upon its threshold:
Ve mâ tevfîkî illâ billâh.
“And my success is only through God.” (Hûd, 88)
Yâ Rabb, innî lâ ürîdü en ekûne kâtile’l-hayyeh. Ürîdü en ekûne abden raâ rahmeteke fî katlihâ.
O my Lord, I do not wish to be the slayer of the serpent. I wish to be a servant who saw Your mercy in its slaying.
Ve lâ ürîdü en ekûne sâhıbe’t-tahârah. Ürîdü en ekûne fakîran şehide fadleke fî tathîrih.
And I do not wish to be the owner of the purity. I wish to be a poor one who witnessed Your bounty in his purification.
Ve lâ ürîdü en ekûle: ene hazir. Ürîdü en ekûle: ente nebbehtenî. Ve lâ ürîdü en ekûle: ene necevt. Ürîdü en ekûle: ente neccceytenî. Ve lâ ürîdü en ekûle: ene sehakt. Ürîdü en ekûle: ente sehakte birahmetike mâ kâne seyüfsidünî lev teraktehû.
And I do not wish to say, “I was wary.” I wish to say, “You alerted me.” I do not wish to say, “I was saved.” I wish to say, “You saved me.” I do not wish to say, “I crushed.” I wish to say, “By Your mercy You crushed what would have corrupted me had You left it.”
O my Lord, crush within us the head of self-conceit before it speaks. Crush the head of the claim before it adorns itself. Crush the head of beholding the deed before it becomes a hidden idol. And crush the head of beholding the crushing, before the ego says, “I am the one who crushed.”
For we do not feel safe from the ego even while it curses the ego. Nor safe from it even while it speaks of self-effacement. Nor safe from it even while it writes about self-annihilation. Nor safe from it even while it says, “Praise be to God.”
İllâ en tahfezahâ ent. İllâ en tekfiyehâ ent. İllâ en tetevellâhâ ent.
Unless You protect it. Unless You suffice it. Unless You take charge of it.
İnne’n-nefse leemmâratün bi’s-sûi illâ mâ rahime rabbî.
“Indeed the self is a persistent commander of evil — except those on whom my Lord has mercy.” (Yûsuf, 53)
Neam yâ Rabb. İllâ mâ rahimt.
Yes, O my Lord. Except that on which You have mercy.
We are not saved from the self except by Your mercy. We are not saved from its evil except by Your covering. We are not saved from its cunning except by Your light. We are not saved from its claim except by Your oneness. And we are not saved from its self-conceit except by Your showing us our own poverty.
Yâ Rabb, ic‘alnâ izâ raeynâ ra’se’l-hayyeti lâ nenşeğılü bisûreti’l-hayyeh, bel nenşeğılü bifadlike’llezî azharahâ. Ve izâ suhıkat, lâ nenşeğılü bikuvveti’d-darbeh, bel birahmetike’lletî lem tümhilhâ. Ve izâ selime’l-kalbü, lâ nenşeğılü biselâmeti’l-kalb, bel bimen sellemehû ve hafizahû ve seterah. Ve izâ kulnâ: el-hamdü lillâh, lâ nenşeğılü bihüsni’l-hamd, bel bimen ecre’l-hamde ale’l-lisân.
O my Lord, make us, when we see the head of the serpent, not preoccupied with the form of the serpent, but with Your bounty that exposed it. When it is crushed, not preoccupied with the force of the blow, but with Your mercy that gave it no respite. When the heart is made safe, not preoccupied with the heart’s safety, but with the One who made it safe, protected it, and covered it. And when we say, “Praise be to God,” not preoccupied with the beauty of the praise, but with the One who set the praise flowing upon the tongue.
Yâ Rabb, ahricnâ min ibâdeti’l-hatari ilâ şühûdi’l-hıfz. Ve min mürâkabeti’l-hayyeti ilâ mürâkabeti hâfizi’l-kalb. Ve min ferahi’n-necâti ilâ hamdi’l-müneccî. Ve min ru’yeti’s-seyfi ilâ ru’yeti’l-yedi’lletî halakati’s-seyf. Ve min ru’yeti’l-yedi ilâ ru’yeti’l-emri küllihî lek.
O my Lord, bring us out of the worship of the danger into the witnessing of the protection; from watching the serpent to watching the Guardian of the heart; from the joy of deliverance to the praise of the Deliverer; from seeing the sword to seeing the Hand that created the sword; and from seeing the Hand to seeing that the whole affair belongs to You.
Kul inne’l-emre küllehû lillâh.
“Say: Indeed, the whole affair belongs to God.” (Âl ‘Imrân, 154)
The whole affair belongs to You. Even the danger, when it appeared, appeared by Your leave. Even the deliverance, when it came, came by Your bounty. Even the repentance, when it arose, arose by Your drawing. And even the passing-away from the claim does not occur except through You.
So do not make us worship the weapon with which You protected us; nor the wakefulness with which You awakened us; nor the understanding with which You made us understand; nor the effacement with which You effaced our claim. And make us pass through all of that unto You.
Yâ Rabb, inne hâzihi hiye’r-rahmetü’l-hafiyyeh:
O my Lord, this is the hidden mercy:
En tekşife li’l-abdi adüvvehû fî evveli hurûcih. Sümme tünkızehû minh. Sümme tünkızehû min ru’yeti ennehû enkaze nefseh. Sümme tünkızehû mine’l-fahri biennehû lem yeftehir. Sümme tübkîhi fî makâmin vâhid:
That You expose to the servant his enemy at the very first of its emergence. Then You rescue him from it. Then You rescue him from seeing that he rescued himself. Then You rescue him from taking pride in not having taken pride. Then You keep him in a single station:
Abdün fakîrun yekûl:
A poor servant who says:
El-hamdü lillâh.
Praise belongs to God.
O my Lord, make this station for us a covering, not a claim. Make this understanding upon us a mercy, not a trial. Make this disclosure for us a humility, not a hardness. Make this crushing of the ego a life for the heart. And make the death of our claim the birth of a truer praise.
Yâ Rabb, lâ tetruk fi’l-kalbi hayyeten tekbüru fi’l-hafâ’. Ve lâ da‘vâ telbesü sevbe’l-ihlâs. Ve lâ ucben yelbesü sevbe’ş-şükr. Ve lâ kasveten telbesü sevbe’l-ğîreti aleyk. Ve lâ müşâhedeten li’n-nefsi telbesü sevbe’l-fenâ’.
O my Lord, do not leave in the heart a serpent that grows in secret; nor a claim that wears the garment of sincerity; nor a self-conceit that wears the garment of thanks; nor a hardness that wears the garment of zeal for You; nor a beholding of the self that wears the garment of self-effacement.
Tahhirnâ minnâ. Sümme tahhirnâ min ru’yeti tahâratinâ. Sümme tahhirnâ min talebi makâmin fî tahâratinâ. Sümme ebkınâ haysü yelîku bi’l-abd:
Purify us from ourselves. Then purify us from beholding our purity. Then purify us from seeking a station in our purity. Then keep us where it befits a servant to be:
Alâ bâbik, bilâ da‘vâ, bilâ havl, bilâ kuvveh, bilâ emnin mine’n-nefs, ve bilâ ye’sin min rahmetik.
At Your door: with no claim, no power, no strength, no feeling of safety from the self, and no despair of Your mercy.
Yâ Rabb, ente’llezî tuhricü mine’z-zulümâti ile’n-nûr. Feahricnâ min zulmeti’n-nefsi ilâ nûrik. Ve min zulmeti’l-ucbi ilâ nûri’l-ihlâs. Ve min zulmeti şühûdi’t-tâati ilâ nûri şühûdi’l-fadl. Ve min zulmeti ru’yeti’n-necâti ilâ nûri ru’yeti’l-müneccî. Ve min zulmeti kavli “ene sehakt” ilâ nûri kavl:
O my Lord, You are the One who brings forth out of the darknesses into the light. So bring us out of the darkness of the self into Your light; from the darkness of self-conceit into the light of sincerity; from the darkness of beholding the obedience into the light of beholding the bounty; from the darkness of seeing the deliverance into the light of seeing the Deliverer; and from the darkness of saying, “I crushed,” into the light of saying:
Allâhü sehak. Allâhü hafiz. Allâhü seter. Allâhü rahim. Allâhü kefâ.
God crushed. God protected. God covered. God had mercy. God sufficed.
Hasbünallâhü ve ni‘me’l-vekîl. Ni‘me’l-mevlâ ve ni‘me’n-nasîr.
God is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs. What an excellent Master, and what an excellent Helper.
Allâhümme salli ve sellim ve bârik alâ seyyidinâ Muhammed, abdike ve rasûlik, asfe’l-halkı ubûdiyyeten, ve ekmelihim fakran, ve a‘zamihim hamden, ve eşeddihim kıyâmen bihakkık, ve alâ âlihî ve sahbihî ecmaîn.
O God, send blessings, peace, and grace upon our master Muhammad — Your servant and Messenger, the purest of creation in servanthood, the most perfect of them in poverty, the greatest of them in praise, and the most steadfast of them in fulfilling Your right; and upon all his family and companions.
